Bigelow, Henry Jacob

Henry Jacob Bigelow (March 11, 1818, Boston, Massachusetts, USA - October 30, 1890, Newton, ibid.) - American surgeon and medical writer, professor of medicine at Harvard University. He is best known as an adversary of vivisection and an innovator in the treatment of kidney disease.

Biography

Henry Jacob Bigelow was born in the family of a professor of medicine at Harvard University and initially studied it there, then studied medicine also at Dartmouth College. In 1841 he received a doctorate in medicine from Harvard University, in 1846 he was elected a member of the board of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He died in his country house, was buried in Mount Auburn cemetery.

Bigelow is associated with the invented method of removing from the bladder, after stone crushing, fragments of crushed stone with the help of a suction apparatus, which was a significant improvement in stone crushing surgery in those days. This method was described by Bigelow in his work: "Litholapaxy or rapid lithotrity with evacuation" (Boston, 1878).

Other works of Bigelow: "Manuel of orthopedic surgery" (Boston, 1845); "Ether and chloroform; a compendium of their history and discovery ”(ibid., 1848); “The mechanism of dislocation and fracture of the hip, with the reduction of the dislocations by the flexion method” (Philadelphia, 1869).
