History

The earliest traces of human presence on the territory of the commune date back to the 6th – 5th centuries BC - the settlement of . During the colonization of Sicily by the ancient Greeks, the settlement of Kaliruni was founded here, which from the Greek language translates as “flowing beautifully” - a hint of a nearby river. Then this territory was part of the Calabishetta mosquito, after which it was included in the province of Girgenti and the eparchy of the same name. Since the conquest of the island by the Normans, it has become part of the Feud of the Barresi clan. In 1300, after the revolt of Giovanni Barrezi, the feud was confiscated by Federico III, king of Sicily, and transferred to Bernardo de Siniscalco, becoming the barony of Fumesalato. [2]

In 1496, Antonio Salamone gave Casale Caliruni as a dowry to his daughter Violante de Jaen i Salamone, who married Nicolo Lancelotto Galletti on April 24, 1549. On July 18, 1607, Nicolo Galletti turned to Filippo II, King of Sicily, with the request to establish the commune of San Cataldo on the ruins of the ancient settlement of Kaliruni and received prior permission from the Viceroy of Sicily. Permission from Filippo III, King of Sicily, was received only in 1621. In 1627, the Marquis was established here, and the first Marquis of San Cataldo was Vincenzo Galletti. [2]

From the moment of its foundation until 1817, the commune of San Cataldo was part of the province of Girgenti and until 1844-1845 was in the jurisdiction of the diocese of Girgenti . In 1812, after the adoption of the constitution in the kingdom of Sicily, the commune ceased to be part of the feud. In 1818, it was included in the newly formed province of Caltanissetta , and in 1844-1845 it was transferred to the jurisdiction of the eparchy of the same name . The municipality of San Cataldo suffered a great deal during the uprising of the carbonarians in 1820. Locals supported Risorgimento , for which, after the island was included in the united Italy , on December 18, 1865, the commune of San Cataldo received city status. [2]
