Geography
According to the US Census Bureau , the city’s area is 58 km², of which 57.7 km² is land and 0.28 km² is water. [one]
History
In 1822, a piece of land that included the area now known as Plainfield was acquired by Jeremy Hadley from Preble County, Ohio . Ten years later, he sold it to his son Elias Hadley. In 1839, Levy Jessup and Elias Hadley founded the city. [2] It got its name from the early "friends" (Quakers) who settled around the area and established several prayer houses throughout the county, including the important Western Yearly Meeting of Friends in Plainfield. "Friends" were "plain" people, so the name of the city is Plainfield.
Demographics
According to the 2010 census [3], there were 27,631 people, 9,747 households, and 6,756 families residing in the city. City racial makeup: 85.2% White, 7.9% African American, 0.2% Native American, 3.3% Asian, 1.5% other race, 1.8% two or more races, and 4.0% Spaniards. or Hispanics.
There were 9,747 households in the city, of which 37.1% had children under the age of 18, 52.0% married couples, 12.3% women living without husbands, 5.0% men living without wives and 30, 7% did not have a family. 25.7% of all households consisted of individuals and 8.7% were single people aged 65 and over.
The age structure of the city: 24.5% of people under the age of 18 years, 9% from 18 to 24 years old, 30.9% from 25 to 44 years old, 24.3% from 45 to 64 years old and 11.3% of people under the age of 65 years and older. The average age was 35.5 years.
