Biography
Andrei Sbitnev was born on August 25, 1910 in the city of Nizhneudinsk (now the Irkutsk Region ). He graduated from four classes of the school, after which he worked, and for eight years led a department store in his hometown. In June 1941, Sbitnev was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . Since the end of 1943 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. In 1944, he graduated from the Tashkent Infantry School. In the battles he was wounded [1] .
By August 1944, Lieutenant Andrei Sbitnev commanded a company of the 170th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 57th Guards Rifle Division of the 8th Guards Army of the 1st Belorussian Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of Poland . On August 1, 1944, Sbitnev’s company was among the first to cross the Vistula River to the Magnushevsky bridgehead and took an active part in capturing German trenches and repelling enemy counterattacks [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, for “exemplary execution of the command missions at the front of the battle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown” of the guard, Lieutenant Andrei Sbitnev was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Medal Star ” under the number 8668 [1] .
In subsequent battles, Sbitnev was seriously injured. In 1947, with the rank of senior lieutenant, he was transferred to the reserve. He lived and worked in Nizhneudinsk. He died on May 26, 1970, was buried in Nizhneudinsk [1] .
