Biography
Ivan Sankov was born on July 22, 1912 in the village of Big Butyrki (now the Manturovsky district of the Kursk region ). After elementary school he worked as a concrete worker. In 1934, Sankov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1939 he graduated from junior lieutenant courses, in 1942 - from the Shot course. From the same year - on the fronts of World War II [1] .
By September 1944, Major Ivan Sankov commanded a battalion of the 1345th Infantry Regiment of the 399th Infantry Division of the 48th Army of the 1st Belorussian Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of Poland . On September 3, 1944, the Sankov battalion broke through the German defenses in the area of the village of Rynek and, chasing the retreating enemy, crossed the Narew next day in the vicinity of the village of Ostrow and captured the bridgehead on its shore, after which he successfully held it until the main forces crossed. January 26, 1945 Sankov died in battle [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated March 24, 1945, Major Ivan Sankov was posthumously awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Order of Lenin , two orders of the Red Banner , orders of Alexander Nevsky , World War 1 degree and the Red Star , a number of medals [1] .
