General information

The station is engaged in scientific research in the direction - "Geophysics of the permafrost zone". It includes the development and improvement of geophysical methods for studying the permafrost zone; the study of the interaction of engineering structures in the process of their construction, operation and repair and restoration work with the environment; comprehensive geocryological studies in areas of intensive nature management.

History

The Vilyui scientific permafrost station of the Institute of permafrost of the Siberian branch of the Academy of Sciences of the Russian Federation was organized due to the need for geocryological studies in the areas of diamond deposits in the Yakut Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, as well as geothermal studies in the construction area of the Vilyui Hydroelectric Power Station [1] . The initiators of the creation of the Vilyui NIMS are the director of the Institute of permafrost P.I. Melnikov and the Joint Scientific Council on the Geological, Mineralogical and Geographical Sciences of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The first head of VNIMS was Rostislav Mikhailovich Kamensky [2] .
