Wood County ( eng. Wood County ) is located in the United States , West Virginia . Officially formed on December 21 , 1798, it got its name in honor of the American political and statesman, the 11th Governor of the State of Virginia, James Wood . As of 2012 , the population was 86,701 people.

According to the US Census Bureau , the total area of the county is 976 km², of which 951 km² is land and 28 km², or 2.8% is water.

According to the 2000 census [1] , there are 87,986 residents in the district as a part of 36,275 households and 24,884 families . The population density is 92 people per km ². There are 39,785 residential buildings on the territory of the district, with a building density of 42 buildings per km ². The racial composition of the population: White - 97.32%, African Americans - 1.01%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.21%, Asians - 0.51%, Hawaiians - 0.04%, representatives of other races - 0.14 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.77%. Hispanic made up 0.58% of the population, regardless of race .
29.30% of the total number of households are children under the age of 18, 54.30% of households are married couples living together, 10.80% of households are single women without a spouse, 31.40% of households households are not related to families , 27.10% of households consist of one person, 11.50% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.39 people and the average family size is 2.88 people.
