History

The square appeared almost at the same time as the railway station, in the 1870s.

Title

Previously, the square was called Vokzalnaya because of the former Moscow railway station located next to it. Then, after the rescue operation at the crash site of the Chelyuskin steamer, it was renamed Chelyuskintsev Square. After the Second World War, it was renamed the Revolution Square.

World War II

During WWII, the square, along with the Moscow railway station , was attacked by German aircraft . However, the German pilots missed the target [1] . One bomb exploded on the rails, the second - pierced the roof of the house along Chkalov Street, the third - fell near the hospital. In response, volleys of anti-aircraft guns rained down. But they also did not reach the enemy. But the “house” and military warehouse were “knocked out”.

Current status

Revolution Square is one of the most visited places in Nizhny Novgorod. A major role is played by the presence of the railway station and the Kanavinsky bus station, from which the main stream of visitors flows.

Buildings

Several large shopping centers are located on Revolution Square: TsUM, Respublika and Chkalov. The central department store is the oldest of them: the building was designed by architects Valentin Rymarenko and Anatoly Zhukov in 1938, and was built after the end of the war (opened April 30, 1954). The second wing was opened in 1995. In the Soviet years, the Central Department Store was the largest center of trade throughout the Gorky region [2] .
