Biography

He graduated from school at the Waddilove Institute. Until 1953, he taught in elementary schools, then became a journalist in the newspaper Limited, having made a career, in 1956 became the first African editor of Daily News. In 1962, he left journalism to join the ZAPU . However, a year later he leaves ZAPU and becomes an activist of ZANU. In September 1963 he left Southern Rhodesia and went to study political science at Princeton University, USA, which he graduated in 1967. Then he lectured at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, and at the same time became a secretary of ZANU for international affairs on the line.

After independence, Zimbabwe (1980) held a number of key positions in the government:

  • 1980-1982 - Minister of Information and Tourism, at this post introduced strict accreditation for foreign journalists, which was to be held monthly,
  • 1982-1987 - Minister of Information, Post and Telecommunications,
  • 1987-1995 - Minister of Foreign Affairs of Zimbabwe,
  • 1995-1996 - Minister of Public Works, Labor and Social Security,
  • 1996-2000 - Minister of Industry and Trade of Zimbabwe.

In 2004, he was appointed Secretary of Information and Public Relations of the Central Committee of ZANU-PF. In June 2006, he accused the International Crisis Prevention Group of attempting a coup against President Mugabe by supporting the Movement for Democratic Change. In October of that year, he was involved in another scandal. He publicly expressed his support for the 1982 actions of the Zimbabwean authorities, which sent the Fifth Brigade to Matabeleland Province, resulting in the deaths of 20,000 people.

He authored a biography of President Mugabe.
