Biography
Alexander Samofalov was born on December 10, 1926 in the village of Pankratovka (now the Izmalkovsky district of the Lipetsk region ). He graduated from five classes of the school. In 1943, Samofalov was called up for service in the Navy of the USSR. Since October 1944 - on the fronts of World War II [1] .
By April 1945, the senior sailor Alexander Samofalov was the minder of the half - glider of the 1st separate detachment of half-gliders of the 1st brigade of river ships of the Dnieper military flotilla . Distinguished himself during the Berlin operation . On the night of April 23-24, 1945, under enemy fire, Samofalov proceeded to ferry advanced assault troops across the Oder , transporting a total of about two infantry companies in four hours. When the commander of the half-glider was killed, Samofalov replaced him and successfully led the crossing. During the next flight he died. He was buried in a mass grave in Kostrzyn nad Odrou [1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 31, 1945, for the "exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the battle against the German invaders and shown courage and heroism", senior sailor Alexander Samofalov was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Order of Lenin and a medal. Forever enrolled in the lists of personnel of the military unit [1] .
