Biography
Born in Oslo on August 12, 1923 . The younger brother of actress Edel Ekblad (1914-1994). From childhood, he was interested in art, mostly painting, but in his school years he preferred to study the Norwegian flora. He studied at the University of Oslo , in 1951 he graduated with a bachelor's degree and was appointed assistant professor of the Botanical Garden at the University of . Ekblad’s dissertation on Gasteromycetes was subsequently recognized as an important independent work on the systematics of these mushrooms. In 1968, Eckblad received a Ph.D. in dissertation.
During World War II he worked as an assistant to the botanist and humanist Christian Horne . After the war, he taught at the University of Oslo's Botanical Laboratory. In 1971-1979 he was an assistant professor of phytogeography at the University of Bergen .
From 1963 to 1970, Ekblad was the editor of the journal Nytt Magasin for Botanikk , and from 1981-1983, the mycological journal Blyttia . In 1984, he was elected a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences.
F.-E. Eckblad wrote many articles on the discomycetes of Northern Europe, which were studied very poorly until the middle of the 20th century. Before him, Professor Axel Bluett was professionally engaged in the study of mycology in Norway at the end of the 19th century, laying the foundation for the study of pyrenomycetes and geoglossic . Ekblad also published several books on mycogeography , created maps of the ranges of many cap mushrooms. In addition to mycology, Ekblad was interested in tropical fruits, as well as botanical history.
He died on July 14, 2000 .
