As a result of the disease, smallpox at the age of three became blind . He received his musical education at the Institute for the Blind in Vienna, then continued his studies at the Music Conservatory under the direction of S. Zechter .

He toured France, England, Russia and Scandinavia.

Friendly relations connected him with the blind king George V of Hanover . From 1865 he became a pianist in the royal chamber orchestra, and after the occupation and annexation of Hanover by Prussia , he left King V in exile in Vienna the same year, following the results of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 .

Here he worked as a teacher in the theory of music and playing the piano . Among his students were A. Schoenberg , J. Bittner and P. Wittgenstein .

His piano was praised by contemporary critics for technical excellence.

In 1875 he settled in the Austrian Gmunden and took organ playing lessons from the famous church musician Johann E. Aber. In 1904, J. Labor was awarded the title of “Imperial Court Organist”.

At the request of his student Paul Wittgenstein and at the expense of the Wittgenstein family, in 1912 he published almost all of his musical works.
