By order of the NKVD of the USSR No. 31 of 06/26/1941, the division entered into operational subordination to the head of the rear security guard of the Western Front .
The division during the Great Patriotic War performed the tasks of protecting the Western Railway , Kalinin Railway , Moscow-Kiev Railway , Belarusian Railway , road bridges , and the military rear of the Western, Kalininsky , Bryansk fronts. Separate units , subunits , armored trains and sniper division teams took an active part in the hostilities on the Western, Bryansk front, in the defense of Mogilev , in the Moscow battle .
By the beginning of the fighting, the division consisted of armored trains No. 53, No. 58 (former Polish No. 55 "Bartosh Glovatsky"), No. 73 and No. 76. On June 23, 1941, the division commander received a directive from the chief of troops of the NKVD who regulated the new conditions . The main task for them was determined to provide fire support to defending small units. Armored train No. 53 was supposed to cover the Polotsk railway junction , armored train No. 76 went to Molodechno to support the 9th Cavalry Division , No. 73 remained at the Belarus station .
Their combat biography was very short. Within a few days, German dive bombers and tanks destroyed the armored train No. 73, and on the Baranavichy-Poogorel station, German armored train No. 58 was broken by German tanks.
On June 26, 1941, a company of motorcycle armored wagons of the 53rd railway regiment of the NKVD, which had previously been deployed on the Kalininskaya railway, as part of two motorized wagons, arrived in Polotsk to cover the railway junction. On July 10, 1941, one of the moto armored wagons was cut off by the enemy on the stretch of Polota - Dretun . Wehrmacht sappers managed to mine and blow up the railway line. After the ammunition ran out, the team blew up the moto armored wagon.
The armored train No. 76, which survived in the battles on the western border, got to the encirclement near Bryansk. This time he was unlucky: cut off from his troops and sustained heavy damage, he was blown up by his team. Armored train No. 53 died later in the battle at the Tunnel station [6] .
