Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau , the city’s area is 64 km², of which 64 km² is land and 0.78 km² is water.
History
In 1843, the first Council of District Commissioners appointed by the General Assembly chose the area in the center of the district as a district center and in the same year the city of Monroe was formed. Named in honor of James Monroe , the fifth president of the country. The city became a trading center for the agricultural regions of the country that grew tobacco.
Monroe was the center of action in the late 1950s and early 1960s related to the civil rights movement of blacks in the United States because of its widespread segregation.
