Aircraft

The Boeing 707-437 with tail number VT-DJJ (factory number 17723, serial 100) was launched by The Boeing Company on January 27, 1960 . 4 Rolls-Royce 508 Conway turbofan engines were installed on it. On February 19, the aircraft was handed over to the customer - the Indian airline Air-India International (later renamed Air-India ), where it was named अन्नपूर्णा १ (Annapurna) . In the history of the airline, it was the first jet airliner, and on May 14 of the same year [1960] he began to fly to New York via London . Subsequently, the aircraft was renamed गौरी शंकर (Gauri-Shankar) [1] .

Holocaust

The aircraft operated passenger flight AI403 from Singapore to Bombay with intermediate landings in Kuala Lumpur and Madras [2] . The flight was completed without significant deviations along the entire route, and with 12 crew members and 99 passengers on board, flight 403 landed in Bombay. It was raining in Bombay when the airliner firmly landed on the strip, after which, due to aquaplaning, it turned to the left with a simultaneous rebound. The commander decided to go to the second round and increased the engine mode, but did not manage to straighten the plane. The airliner drove into the drainage ditch, after which the landing gear collapsed, and the rear of the fuselage detached, causing a fire. Of the 111 people on board, 17: 2 flight attendants and 15 passengers died in the accident [3] [4] .

Reasons

The cause of the accident was the error of the second pilot , who 12 seconds before the first touch prematurely reduced the engine operation mode, although the height of 1300 feet (396 meters) had not yet been passed. This led to an increase in the vertical rate of descent, and then a hard landing [3] .
