Selma is an American historical motion picture directed by Ava Duverney . The film is based on the events of the 1965 march in Selma and Montgomery as part of the black civil rights movement in the United States , especially voting rights. The plot of the film begins in 1963, after the murder of four black children by white terrorists in Birmingham, Alabama. In Selma, meanwhile, a race for voting rights is unfolding, during which Martin Luther King is trying to convey to Lyndon Johnson the importance of the black vote. The main events then unfold around the marches of black people for the right to vote, while the authorities, in the person of the state governor George Wallace, oppose them.
