Schildbach, Karl-Herman

Karl German Schildbach (June 1, 1824, Leipzig - March 13, 1888, ibid. [2] ) - German doctor and medical writer, one of the founders of orthopedic science in Germany.

Biography

He studied at the school of St. Nicholas and since 1843 he studied medicine at the University of Leipzig , in 1846 he moved to the University of Heidelberg , where in 1848 he received a doctorate in medicine [3] . In February 1849 he returned to Leipzig and received medical practice. In 1850 he left for the Russian Empire and accompanied as a doctor some Russian nobles on their foreign trips. In 1852 he returned to his homeland, in 1853 he settled in Danzig , where he headed the local institute of hydrotherapy and gymnastics. Since 1859, having returned to Leipzig, he was vice-director of the orthopedic hospital Moritz Schreber , who headed it in 1861 after the death of the latter; in 1862 he became an honorary citizen of Leipzig, after some time he opened a private clinic for therapeutic exercises for wealthy patients. In 1875, he was rehabilitated at the University of Leipzig as a specialist in therapeutic gymnastics, and a year later he founded the university and headed the country's first orthopedic clinic, which he managed until 1885 [3] .

He was a member of the Leipzig Gymnastics Society, the Leipzig Life Insurance Society, the Amsterdam Medical and Surgical Society, the Masonic Lodge. He actively promoted gymnastics among women, in politics he was a supporter of the unification of all German states under the control of Prussia. He died in his hometown after a short illness.

His works relate to orthopedics and medical gymnastics. The most important of them: "Die Scoliose" (Leipzig, 1872); Orthopädische Klinik (ibid., 1877); Kinderstube-Gymnastik (ibid. 1880); "Die Schulbankfrage und die Kunze'sche Schulbank" (ibid., 1869; 2nd edition - 1872) [3] .
