Leonard Sovinsky ( Polish Leonard Sowiński , November 7, 1831 , Berezna village, Litinsky district, Podolsk province (now Khmelnytsky district, Vinnitsa region - December 23, 1887 , village Stetkovtsy (now Chudnovsky district , Zhytomyr region , Ukraine ) - Polish writer, poet, translator, an outstanding historian of literature, an active figure in the national liberation movement, a representative of the Ukrainian school in Polish literature.

Biography

The son of the Polish gentry and the South Russian Orthodox peasant woman. He received a home education, then entered the Medzhibozh noble school.

In 1851 he graduated from the historical and philological faculty of Kiev University of St. Vladimir , entered the medical faculty, but did not finish the course. In 1855 he went on a trip to the countries of Western Europe, where he stayed until 1857. In 1858-1862 he lived in Podillia and in Kiev. He was an employee of the "Vilnius Courier" .

For participation in the leadership of national-patriotic student organizations from 1862-1868 he was exiled in the Kursk province, in 1868 he went abroad, and later lived in Warsaw, where he studied journalism.

The hardships of life and the propensity for alcoholism undermined his health. He died in December 1887.

Creativity

Lyricist and novelist, literary historian and critic, poet and translator, Sovinsky left a noticeable mark on Polish literature.

He is the author of the drama “In Ukraine” (“Na Ukrainie”) (1873, about the events during the January uprising in Poland in 1863 ), the works “Study of Modern Ukrainian Literature” (“Studja nad ukraińską literaturą dzisiejszą”, 1860), “ Taras Shevchenko ”(“ Taras Szewczenko ”, 1861) with the translation of the poem“ Haidamaki ”, the five-volume book“ Sketches from the History of Polish Literature ”(“ Rysowi dziejów literatury polskiej ”, 1874-1878), the book“ School Memories ”(“ Wspomnienia szkolne, ” 1885), which gives a picture of the school system in educational institutions of the South-Western Territory in 1838-1845. and etc.

He translated Shevchenko’s poem “Naimichka” and other works of the poet.
