Biography

The only son of William de la Paul , 1st Duke of Suffolk, and Alice Chaucer, daughter of Thomas Chaucer, chairman of the House of Commons of Parliament, and granddaughter of the English poet Jeffrey Chaucer .

On February 7, 1450, seven-year-old John de la Paul was married to seven-year-old Lady Margaret Beaufort , the daughter of John Beaufort, 1st Duke of Somerset , and Margaret Beauchean . Due to the age of the spouses, the marriage was fictitious and was annulled in February 1453.

Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York , was the sworn enemy of John de la Paul, but the latter supported the York Party during the Scarlet and White Rose War .

In May 1450, after the execution of William de la Paul, the title and possessions of the Duke of Suffolk were confiscated. On March 23, 1463, King Edward IV of England issued a letter of honor to his son-in-law John de la Paul for the title of Duke of Suffolk. He was also appointed constable of Wallingford Castle in Oxfordshire .

In 1458, he remarried to Elizabeth , daughter of Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York, and Cecilia Neville . Elizabeth was the sister of the kings of England, Edward IV and Richard III . Thus, John de la Paul became the son-in-law of the two kings of England.

In 1472, John de la Paul was knighted by King Edward IV of the Order of the Garter and proclaimed great steward of the University of Oxford . For a time, he was also the royal lieutenant of Ireland .

After the death of King Edward IV in 1483, the Duke of Suffolk supported the claim to the royal throne of Richard III. After the death of the latter on August 22, 1485 at the Battle of Bosworth and the accession to the royal throne of his opponent Henry VII Tudor , John de la Paul continued to maintain influence at the royal court and enjoyed the location of the new monarch.

Between October 29, 1491 and October 27, 1492, John de la Paul, Duke of Suffolk , passed away. He was buried in Wingfield , Suffolk County.
