Ceremony

According to the April 7, 1947 issue of The New York Times , the award “does not define the laureates as“ best ”or“ first, ”but the nominations in which they are presented will change from year to year.” [2] The title "Tony" was awarded at the ceremony itself. Pemberton during the awards ceremony called them "Tony", referring to the nickname of Antoinette Perry - one of the founders of " The American Theater Wing " [3] .

During the ceremony, numbers from the musicals “ Brigadun ”, “ Street Scene ” and “ Rainbow Finian ” were presented.

The award itself looked like a scroll of three types: a silver compact case (for women) and a letter engraved in gold or a cigarette lighter (for men). Tickets for the first ceremony cost $ 7 each, and there were over 1,000 guests [1] .
