According to the United States Census Bureau , the county’s total area is 1,090 km², of which 1,085 km² is land and 4.4 km² or 0.4% are water bodies.

Demographics

According to the 2000 census [1] , 62,980 residents of 26,509 households and 17,946 families live in the okrug. The population density is 58 people per km ². There are 30,143 residential buildings in the district, with a building density of 28 buildings per km². Racial composition of the population: white - 92.56%, African - Americans - 5.82%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.19%, Asians - 0.46%, Hawaiians - 0.01%, representatives of other races - 0.10 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.85%. Hispanics accounted for 0.45% of the population, regardless of race .

Out of the total number of households , 26.70% are children under the age of 18 years, 53.00% of households are married couples living together, 11.20% of households are single women without a spouse, 32.30% of households households are not related to families , 28.70% of households consist of one person, 13.60% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.33 people and the average family size is 2.85 people.

The age structure of the district: 21.10% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 26.20% from 25 to 44, 25.50% from 45 to 64, and 17.40% from 65 and older. The average age of a resident of the district is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.10 males . For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.70 males .

The average household income in the district was 26 628 USD , per family - 33 524 USD . The average male earnings were $ 29,243 versus $ 19,013 for a woman . The per capita income was $ 15,563. About 14.70% of families and 19.70% of the total population were below the poverty line , including 28.90% of youth (those who were not yet 18 years old) and 12.70% of those who were already over 65 years old.
