Club career

Pupil of youth teams of football clubs " Newcastle United " and " Wallsend ."

In adult football, he made his debut in 1979 with appearances for Carlisle United , in which he spent three seasons, taking part in 104 championship matches.

Subsequently, from 1981 to 1983, he played at Vancouver Whitecaps , with a short break at Manchester United , in which he played only once in the English League Cup.

His game for Vancouver Whitecaps attracted the attention of the Newcastle United club's coaching staff, which he joined in 1983. He played for the team from Newcastle for the next four seasons of his playing career. Most of the time spent at Newcastle United was a major player in the attacking team. As part of the “forty” was one of the main scorers of the team, with an average performance of 0.41 goals per championship game.
