Biography
Eustratios (a diminutive form of Stratis) Eleutheriadis was born in 1897 in the city of Mytilini, on the island of Lesbos , which was still under Ottoman control back then. After the liberation of the island by the Greek fleet in the First Balkan War , he went to Paris in 1915 to study law, but soon left school and devoted himself to the study of the artistic trends of his time. With his critical notes in the magazine Cahiers d'Art from 1926 to 1931, and then in the evening newspaper L'Intransigeant from 1928 to 1933, Eleftheriadis supported young artists [2] . Having gained the trust of artists and sculptors who left a noticeable mark in the 20th century, he became the co-founder of the surrealistic Minotaure magazine ( 1933 ) (together with the Swiss publisher Albert Skira) and the founder of the Verve magazine (1937-1960) [3] , on the pages of which they presented their works by famous artists such as Bonnard , Matisse , Braque , Picasso , Chagall , Leger , Miro and others [4] . From 1943 to 1975, Eleftheriadis published 27 books, with illustrations of famous artists and engravers [5] . In 1979, he donated much of his publishing work, paintings of Greek and French artists of the 20th century, as well as medieval manuscripts, to create a museum named after him in Mytilene . His widow Alice also donated much of the collection to museums in France. We also owe Eleftheriadis the “discovery” of the national artist Theophilos . With the money of Eleftheriadis, the Theophilos Museum was built in Varia Mitilini, near the chapel of St. Paraskeva. Later, in 1979, a few tens of meters from the Museum of Theophilos, the Tériade Museum was built, which houses the works of Greek and foreign artists (such as Tsaruhis, Picasso, Chagall, Matisse and others) that belonged to the early collection of Eleftheriadis [6] . In France, Terjad supported and donated works to the Municipal Museum of Matisse in Le Cato Cambresi [7] . Terjad died in France in 1983.
