Sapphire was born from the male dragon Yormungra, who had his own Rider, and the wild female dragon, Vervada. These dragons died during the fall of the Riders. Blue as a sapphire stone, the Sapphire egg lay next to two others (emerald green and ruby ​​red) at the retinue of King Galbatorix in his castle. The king was desperately trying to find the Riders for these dragons, but to no avail. Not a single dragon claimed a single contender. Later, Brom and his friend Joad discovered a secret passage to the castle of Galbatorix. The Vardens appointed a thief Helfring to steal dragon eggs. Sapphira's egg was stolen, and eventually delivered to the elves, where Arya traveled through Alageysia in the hope of finding the Horseman.

The Book of Eragon

Eragon, hunting, accidentally found her egg in the mountains of Spine and took it for himself, mistaking it for a gem. After a while, a dragon appeared from it. When Eragon decided to give him a name, he learned from Brom the names common among dragons and began to offer them one by one to his dragon. In the process, the sex of the dragon became clear (after that, or rather, that one, refused all male names). She liked the last name suggested and the dragon began to be called Sapphira. Having been born, the dragon did not know the human language and Eragon had to teach it. Sapphira communicates telepathically and rarely condescends to a conversation with someone other than Eragon.

Sapphira considers himself the most beautiful creature in Alageysia. Together with Eragon, she studied in the elven forests. Their mentors were the elf Horseman Oromis and his dragon, Glaedr — the Golden Scales, who managed to escape from Galbatorix. As it turns out in the third book, she kept a secret entrusted by Brom to the true father of Eragon. Sapphire is certainly Eragon's best friend and, like him, the hope of the whole country.

Appearance

The hue and eyes of the dragon are bright saturated blue. She has sharp claws on her legs and spikes on her neck, back and tail. Sapphira has two fangs on the upper jaw, which are visible even if the mouth is closed, and all her teeth are sharp and white, like a real predator. Her head is approximately triangular in shape and has several dark spikes on the tip of the muzzle.

Her body is very compact and aerodynamic, which allows her to gently and easily maneuver in the air. Oromis said that he had not yet seen a dragon that would fly so perfectly and so naturally approach the sky. It was called “Sapphire” because Brom mentioned this name and it was very suitable for the dragon. In fact, it was once the name of Brom’s own dragon, but Eragon did not know about it then.

Dragons by Christopher Paolini are clearly not those powerful pack animals that need to be trained to obey humans. Almost from the very birth, Sapphira already has such wisdom, as if she had lived for many years. At first, her attitude towards Eragon was rather wary. Sapphire is saddened by the fact that almost all representatives of her family were destroyed, and this hunt has not yet stopped. The only thing that stands between her and death is a 15-year-old inexperienced teenager. However, Sapphira knows that Eragon has the potential to become a bold and wise partner, unless Sapphira does not allow him to die before completing training. ^[one]

According to Christopher Paolini, dragons, while still in the egg, were able to choose the most suitable rider for themselves. At the beginning of the training of Eragon, the elves expressed doubts about the correct choice of Saphira precisely the human rider, and not the elven. But Sapphira assured Eragon that Arya had long “introduced” the egg to all the elves — but not one of them was a suitable rider for her. ^[one]

Sapphira's parents were Jormungr and Vervada. The Yormungr was the dragon of one of the Horsemen of the past, and Vervada (Thunderer of the Elven) was a wild dragon. She laid eggs more than once, but only one thing she agreed to entrust to the Horsemen: Sapphire's egg. Both of these dragons died during the War.

The Horseman Bromo dragon was a blue female also named Sapphire. Little is known about her, only the name and the fact that she died in the battle of Douro Arib, defending her Horseman.
