Belyaev, Vasily Vasilievich

Born in the family of a merchant in St. Petersburg. He studied at the gymnasium and at the same time - drawing at the school at the Central School of Technical Drawing of Baron A. L. Stieglitz .

He studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1886-1891). IAH awards: a small silver medal (1887), a large silver (1888 and 1889), a small gold (1890) for the program “Healing the Lame by the Apostle Peter” . The title of class artist of I degree for the program "St. Tsarina Alexandra declares herself a Christian . ” ^[one]

Belyaev created 48 sketches for mosaics of the Church of the Savior on Blood (1887-1900). On the northern wall - "Christ in the house of Mary and Martha" , "Healing the possessed in Capernaum" ; on the sole - “Supper at Emmaus” ; on the eastern wall - “Blessing of the children” ; in the northern small apse - “The Great Exit” (eight saints on the arch of the northern apse), “The Descent of the Holy Spirit” ; in the southern domed dome - The Sermon on the Mount ; in the western domed dome - “Entrance to Jerusalem” ; on the west side - "Position in the grave" ; in 16 sails of small domes - “Cherubs with many readings” ; on the western ceiling - "The Cross in Radiance and the Four Cherubs" ; on the north side of the western part - “Crucifixion” ; on the south side of the western part - "Descent into Hell"; around the western window - “Thy Thought is a kingdom” , “The Second Coming of Christ” , “Guardian Angel” and “Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky” ; on the walls of the small apse of the temple - “The Sign of the Virgin” , “The Image of the Kazan Mother of God” ; in the western part - “Assumption of the Virgin” , “Introduction of the Virgin into the temple” , “Exaltation of the Cross” , “Intercession of the Virgin” , “Sacrifice of Abraham” , “Old Testament Trinity” , “Burning Bush” , “Jacob's Dream” ; on pylons and pilasters - "The Monk Anthony the Great and Ephraim the Syrian" , "The Holy Martyrs George and Tsaritsa Alexandra" , "The Apostles Peter and Paul" , "The Monk Nestor the Chronicler and Moses the Long-suffering" , "The Martyrs Fedor and John of Kiev" , "The Apostles Philip and Bartholomew " ; in the arches of the porch - "Fatherland" , "Cathedral of the Archangel Michael" , "Praise of the Blessed Virgin Mary" , "Sophia the Wisdom of God" ; on the north wall of the bell tower is the Deesis ; in the kokoshniks of the northern facade - “St. Cyril” , “St. Andrew the First-Called” , “St. Anastasia and St. Peter” , “St. George” , “St. Xenia” , “St. Mark” , “Archangel Gabriel” , “Seraphim” , “St. Apostle Andrew " , " St. Archdeacon Stephen and St. James " , " St. John and St. Eustathius . ^[2]

Since 1889, Belyaev - a participant in exhibitions (1st Moscow exhibition of studies). Member of the Society of Historical Artists (1895-1896); exhibitor of the Moscow Society of Art Lovers (1892), the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions (1893-1895), the St. Petersburg Society of Artists (1899, 1904, 1917).

Academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts (1913) and professor-director of the Higher Art School . ^[one]

Head of the workshop of monumental painting (since 1920). Member of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (1923, 1926). Participated in the 7th exhibition of the Department of Fine Arts of the VTsVB Narcompros in Moscow (1919).

In 1921, he was elected vice-rector of the Academy of Arts for the educational part.

Vasily Belyaev died on February 19, 1928 in Leningrad.

From 1895 to 1909, V.V. Belyaev created 48 sketches for mosaics of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in St. Petersburg (Spas on Blood) ^[2] , participated in the painting of the Orthodox Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky in Warsaw (1910).

His work is presented in a number of museums, among them the State Russian Museum , the State Hermitage Museum and others.
