Biography
Akim Savenko was born on September 6, 1914 in the village of Khizhintsy (now Lysyansky district, Cherkasy region of Ukraine ). After graduating from seven classes of the school, he worked at the mine. In 1936, Savenko was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1939, he graduated from the Baku Military Infantry School . Since July 1941 - on the fronts of World War II [1] .
By January 1945, Major Akim Savenko commanded a battalion of the 10th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 6th Guards Rifle Division of the 13th Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of Poland . On the night of January 25-26, 1945, the Savenko battalion was the first to cross the Oder in the vicinity of the settlement of Tarksdorf (now Tarchalice, Commune Voluv, Voluvsky County , Lower Silesian Voivodeship , Poland ) and seized the bridgehead on its western shore, after which it was held until the main forces. In the midst of the battle, Savenko replaced the out-of-order machine gunner and personally fired at the enemy. January 27, 1945 he died in battle. He was buried in the village of Porschwitz (now Prochowice , Legnica County , Lower Silesian Voivodeship , Poland ). He was later reburied at the Kutuzov Memorial in Boleslawiec .
Rewards
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 10, 1945, for the “exemplary fulfillment of command assignments and the courage and heroism shown” of the guard, Major Akim Savenko was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Order of Lenin and a medal [1] .
Memory
In honor of Savenko, a street was named in his native village [1] .
