Clay County is located in the United States , South Dakota . As of 2010 , the population was 13,864 people. It was founded in 1862 , received its name in honor of the American political and military leader Henry Clay .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the total area of the county is 1,080.5 km², of which 1,067.6 km² is land and 13.2 km² or 1.22% are water bodies.

According to the 2000 census [1] , the district has 13,537 residents of 4,878 households and 2,721 families . The population density is 13.00 people per km 2 . In the district there are 5,438 residential buildings, with a building density of about 5.00 buildings per km 2 . Racial composition of the population: white - 92.78%, African Americans - 1.00%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 2.66%, Asians - 1.95%, Hawaiians - 0.01%, representatives of other races - 0.29 %, representatives of two or more races - 1.31%. Hispanics accounted for 0.89% of the population, regardless of race .
Out of the total number of households , 28.00% are children under the age of 18, 45.00% of households are married couples living together, 8.10% of households are single women without a spouse, 44.20% of households households are not related to families , 31.00% of households consist of one person, 8.00% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.32 people and the average family size is 2.93 people.
The age structure of the district: 18.80% under the age of 18, 31.50% from 18 to 24, 23.80% from 25 to 44, 15.80% from 45 to 64, and 15.80% from 65 and older.
