Biography
Vasily Savelyev was born on January 19, 1911 in the village of Rogovo (now - the Soligalichsky district of the Kostroma region ). He graduated from five classes of the school. Since 1928 he lived and worked in Leningrad . In 1933 - 1936 he served in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . Demobilized, returned to Leningrad, worked as deputy director of the school of factory apprenticeship. In July 1941, Savelyev was again drafted into the army. From the same year - on the fronts of World War II. In 1943 he graduated from the Kazan Tank School [1] .
By April 1944, Junior Lieutenant Vasily Savelyev commanded the tank of the 244th separate tank regiment of the Primorsky Army . He distinguished himself during the liberation of Crimea . On April 12, 1944, in the battle near the village of Sultanovka , Savelyev’s crew destroyed several enemy anti-tank guns, and during the subsequent offensive alone captured the enemy convoy, forcing more than 100 German soldiers and officers to lay down their arms. On April 13, 1944, during the reconnaissance, Savelyev’s tank entered Sudak and, moving towards the port, destroyed dozens of cars and wagons, as well as the headquarters building of the German unit. On April 14, in a battle at a fork in the road between Sevastopol and Koktebel, Savelyev and his comrades destroyed 2 self-propelled artillery installations, but their tank was knocked out. After leaving the car, the crew managed to break through to their own, while only the injured radio operator Grushin and Savelyev himself survived. In just three days of fighting, Savelyev and his crew destroyed 2 self-propelled artillery pieces, 5 anti-tank guns, 2 tractors, 7 machine-gun points and several hundred enemy soldiers and officers [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 16, 1944, for “exemplary fulfillment of command assignments and shown courage and heroism in battles with the German invaders,” junior lieutenant Vasily Savelyev was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the awarding of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 2198 [1] .
After the war, Savelyev continued to serve in the Soviet Army. In 1961, with the rank of major, he was transferred to the reserve. He lived and worked in Leningrad. He died on January 17, 1986, was buried in the cemetery of the village of Fedorovskoye, Tosnensky district, Leningrad region [2] .
He was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner , World War 1 degree and the Red Star , a number of medals [1] .
