Biography
Mikhail Shurga was born in 1952 in with. Sokolniki , Pustomytovsky district, Lviv region , Ukrainian SSR . He began to actively engage in rowing in early childhood, was trained at the local specialized school for children and youth at Olympic reserve No. 1 [1] , and later joined the voluntary sports society “ Labor Reserves ”. The first serious success was achieved in 1974, when he won gold in the standings of the fours in the 1000 and 10,000 meters at the adult championship of the Soviet Union. Thanks to a series of successful performances, he was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the world championship in Mexico City - together with a four-seater crew, which also included rowers Nikolai Gorbachev , Anatoly Sharykin and Leonid Derevyanko , defeated all rivals at a distance of ten kilometers and thus became the world champion. For this achievement, according to the results of the season, he was awarded the honorary title “ Honored Master of Sports of the USSR ”.
In the 1975 season, Shurga won the gold medal of the All-Union Championship in the kayak doubles at a distance of 1000 meters. Later I visited the World Cup in Yugoslav Belgrade, tried to defend the world champion title, but this time their four-seater kayak finished third. Shortly after this regatta, Mikhail Shurga ceased to be in the main team of the national team and decided to end his career as an athlete.
