Robert Macaulay ( born Robert Macauley ; born December 11, 1923 , New York - December 26, 2010 , Florida ) is an American businessman and philanthropist. Founder of the international non-profit organization AmeriCares .

Biography

Robert Macaulay was born on December 11, 1923 in Manhattan . He spent his childhood in Greenwich , Connecticut . He studied at Phillips Academy , and then at Yale University, where he lived in the same room with George W. Bush . Macaulay interrupted his studies at the university and joined the army; he served in North Africa as part of the US Air Corps. After completing his military service, he received a bachelor's degree in political science from Yale University in 1945. After university, Macaulay went to work for the family-owned company ML Macauley Corporation, which produced paper. In 1972, he founded his own company Virginia Fiber Corporation, a manufacturer of corrugated cardboard [1] [2] .

In 1975 he began to actively engage in charity. During the Babylift operation to evacuate street children from South Vietnam, Robert Macaulay is chartered at his own expense by Boeing 747 from Pan American World Airways in order to have time to evacuate about 300 children before the fall of Saigon . To do this, he had to lay the house [1] [2] .

In 1981, Pope John Paul II asked Macaulay to arrange for the delivery of humanitarian aid to Poland. He organized a fundraising for the purchase of medical supplies among various organizations. The medical supplies purchased for $ 1.5 million were delivered by air to Poland in March 1982. This year, he founded AmeriCares , an international nonprofit organization dedicated to disaster relief and humanitarian aid. Also in 1982, AmeriCares organized an air bridge to provide medicines for the victims of the civil war in Lebanon . Robert Macaulay served as executive director of AmeriCares until 2002, while not receiving wages [1] . He remained chairman of the organization’s board of directors until his death. [2]

Robert Macaulay died on December 26, 2010 in his Florida home of pulmonary emphysema [1] .
