Puerto Rico women's volleyball team

The Puerto Rican Volleyball Federation was founded in 1958 , and a year later joined the FIVB . The history of the national volleyball teams of the country began in pre-war time. The men's team of Puerto Rico in 1930 for the first time took part in the Games of Central America and the Caribbean . In 1938 in the volleyball tournament of these complex competitions women debuted, including the women's national team of Puerto Rico. In 1974, the Puerto Rico national team debuted at the World Championships held in Mexico . In that tournament, Puerto Rican volleyball players suffered 8 defeats and scored one victory (over the Bahamas national team ), taking the penultimate - 22nd - place. Subsequently, the Puerto Rico team achieved the best result in the world championships in 2002 in Germany , when it was able to enter the top 12 of the 24 teams that took part in the championship .

2009 was the best year in the history of the Puerto Rico women's national team. In that season, Puerto Rican volleyball players for the first time became winners of the Pan American Cup , held in Miami ( USA ). In the quarterfinals of the tournament, Puerto Ricans lost to the Dominican Republic's national team 2: 3, leading 2: 0 in batches, and in the match for bronze they beat the USA team 3: 1. Then the Puerto Rican volleyball players took part in the Grand Prix for the first time, although they only took 10th place with 12 participants, but noted a sensational victory over the Russian team in four games. In September of the same 2009, the Puerto Rico team won the medals in the home championship NORCECA for the first time in its 40-year history of participation in the continental championships. In the semifinals of the competition, Puerto Ricans unexpectedly outplayed Cuba's team 3: 2 (by the 5th game 21:19), and in the final, being one step away from winning the match with the Dominican team , leading 2: 1 in sets, in the 4th game, lost to rivals 30:32. Puerto Rica was not enough for the decisive set of female volleyball players - 8:15 and the silver of the championship. Even the 32 points scored in the final by the leader of the Puerto-Rican attacks Aurea Cruz, who became the most productive player of the championship, did not help to win. The best binding tournament recognized her compatriot Vilmari Mohica.

Puerto Rica volleyball players could climb the podium of the continental championship again after 4 years, becoming the bronze medalists of the 2013 championship . The best scorer of the tournament was Puerto Rican Carina Osasio.

2016 for the women's national team of Puerto Rico has become notable for the Olympic debut. In the North American selection, Puerto Ricans took 3rd place, and then Colombia , Kenya and Algeria beat their home intercontinental qualification and made their way to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . In fact, the Puerto Rico team played badly in the Olympic volleyball tournament , losing in their group of the preliminary stage with the same score 0: 3 for the USA , Serbia , China , the Netherlands and Italy .
