Research Institute of Physics, Odessa National University named after I.I. Mechnikov (previously also called the “Physical Institute”) is the oldest research institute in the higher education system in Ukraine . At present, the Institute’s main activity is the creation of the scientific foundations of phototechnologies (technologies that use light).
The Institute of Physics is located in Odessa on the street. Pasteur , house number 27. The Institute occupies the left wing of the physico-chemical building, which was built in 1898 - 1899 to accommodate the physical and chemical departments of the Novorossiysk Imperial University (architect Tolvinsky ).

History
The Research Institute of Physics of Odessa I.I. Mechnikov National University was established at the beginning of the 20th century as the Institute of Physics of the Novorossiysk Imperial University . In 1926, the activities of the institute were restored by a resolution of the All-Ukrainian Central Executive Committee .
The Institute was the organizer of many scientific meetings and conferences, and in particular, the first All-Union Physical Congress ( 1930 ), the All-Union Conference on Semiconductors ( 1934 ), and the Republican Conference on Scientific Photography ( 1951 , 1976 , 1982 ) .), All-Union Conference on Adsorption ( 1984 ) and others.

Directors
From 1926 to 1964 , the Director of the Institute of Physics was Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences , Professor E. A. Kirillov - winner of the USSR State Prize ( 1952 ), Honored Worker of Science of the Ukrainian SSR. Professor E. A. Kirillov was the creator and leader of a scientific school in the field of scientific photography . Under the guidance of prof. Kirillova Research Institute of Physics has become a recognized center in the world in the field of silver halide photography .
From 1966 to 1974 , the Institute was headed by Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor AE Glauberman , a prominent specialist in the field of solid state physics .
From 1975 to 2005 , the director of the institute was Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor V. M. Belous . In 1999 , the International Scientific Society of Scientific Photography awarded V. M. Belous a medal - “The 1999 Lieven Gevaert Award of the Society of Imaging Science and Technology”, “for recognizing the outstanding contribution in the field of silver halide photography ”.
From 2005 to the present, the Institute is headed by Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor A. V. Tyurin .
