Lea Delaria ( born Lea DeLaria ; born May 23, 1958 ) is an American actress, singer and comedian. Delaria is considered the first open -minded lesbian comedian to perform with her often controversial performances in evening shows [1] . She is known on the screen due to her image of a masculine lesbian [2] .

Early years
Delaria was born in Belleville, Illinois [3] in the family of housewife Jenna Jean and Robert Delaria, a jazz pianist and social worker. [4] Her grandfather and grandmother were Italians. [5] Until the 8th grade, she studied at St. Mary’s School in Belleville, and later, in her speeches, mentioned Catholic education. [five]
Career
Her on-screen debut took place in 1993, at The Arsenio Hall Show. In 1993 , she was featured on Comedy Central 's Out Out show. [6] Delaria is also known for her musical comedy Dos Lesbos (1987–1989), as well as Girl Friday, a comedy that she invented, wrote, directed and starred in. This comedy won the Golden Gull in 1989 for Best Comedy Group in Provincetown, Massachusetts . [7]
Leah released two CDs of her comedies: Bulldyke in a China Shop (1994) and Box Lunch (1997). She also wrote a humorous book , Lea's Book of Rules for the World .
Delaria appeared in the role of Jane in 1998 in the off-Broadway production of The Incredible Story, a gay Bible retelling. [8] Entertainment Weekly wrote: “The Star Was Born with Leah Delaria” because of her role as Hildi Esterhazy in the new adaptation of the musical On The Town (1998) on Broadway . [9] [10] [11] She later played Eddie and Dr. Scott in 2000 in the Broadway musical Rocky Horror Show. [12] Lia Delaria also appeared in many films, including the film The Seventeen Years Frontier and the First Wives Club. Lia combines musical performances in stand-up comedy, focusing on traditional and modern bebop . Delaria said on the show:
It is my personal goal to add bebop to the gay community.
In 2001, she released Plat It Cool. This CD accompanied the album The Double Standarts in 2003 [13] [14] and The Very Best Of Lea Delaria in 2008. In 2001, she voiced Helga Fulgi in the Oblonga television series . On television, Delaria had a secondary role as Madame Dolphins in the soap opera One Life to live ”, which she played in 1999, 2008-09 and 2011. [15] [16] .In 2008, Warner Bros. Records released Delary's first record, which focused on timeless pop standards such as Down With Love, Night and Day, Love Me or Leave Me, and Come Rain or Come Shine. ”

In October 2008, Delaria goes on a tour of Australia, visiting Melbourne , Sydney , Brisbane , Adelaide . She also often collaborated with comedian Maggie Casella, most notably at the annual Christmas Cabaret Show in Toronto , Ontario, and several other cities in Canada and the United States . In July 2010, a version of Delary's All That Jazz song was used on the So You Think You Can Dance show. To this day, she performs at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts. On February 14, 2015, Delaria received the Illions Equality Award as "an advanced performer who used his talent to entertain and enlighten millions of Americans," said Bernard Cherkasov, CEO of the award. At the award ceremony, Delaria said:
As a performer for 33 years changing the perception of lesbians , queer and LGBT people , I want to say that it is an honor for me to see such recognition of my native state. I feel proud of Belleville. Go Maroon!

In 2013, she began playing the role of Carrie “Big Boo” Black in Netflix's series “ Orange - The Hit of the Season ” [21] .
