About the group
2011—2013: Formation, the beginning of creativity
In December 2011, Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford and Calum Hood, who studied at the same college (Norwest Christian College), began recording video covers of popular hits. The first of these videos was posted on February 3, 2011 on the original Hemmings channel on the YouTube video service.
In December 2011, drummer Ashton Irwin joined the group to play their first concert in Sydney, after which Ashton became a permanent member of the group [3] [4] .
5 Seconds of Summer managed to attract the attention of major music labels and publishers by starting to work with one of the largest record company Sony / ATV Music Publishing. The band's first music release, a mini-album called Unplugged , reached number three on the Australian charts for sales of the iTunes online store thanks to the release of the song “Gotta Get Out”. And this despite the fact that the group promoted their music exclusively through social networks [5] .
In the second half of 2012, 5 Seconds of Summer worked with musicians Christian Lo Russo and Joel Chapman from Amy Meredith . Two songs were recorded, Beside You and Unpredictable, which were later released on Somewhere New 's second mini-album. In support of this album, in November 2012, the single “Out of My Limit” was released exclusively in Australia and New Zealand. The album itself was released in December. Also in December 2012, the group went to London , where for some time they recorded new songs with famous bands McFly , Kaiser Chiefs , Busted and Scouting for Girls.
2013 - present Time: Success and Debut Album Release
2013 began with the big news for 5 Seconds of Summer: it was announced in February that the band would go on a Take Me Home Tour world tour with one of the most successful One Direction boy bands who had chosen them to warm up in the UK, North America , Australia and New Zealand . The tour began on February 23 with a concert at London's O2 Arena and ended for 5 Seconds of Summer on October 30, 2013 in Melbourne . In May, during the break of the tour, 5 Seconds of Summer returned to their homeland in Australia, where for a month they gave concerts as part of their own Pants Down Tour . On November 21 of the same year, 5 Seconds of Summer signed a contract with the major label Capitol Records [6] .
On February 21, 2014, the band released their official debut single, “She Looks So Perfect,” which could be pre-ordered on February 5. Over the course of two days, the track was in first position in iTunes sales in 39 countries, including Australia and the UK. After the world release, the single managed to top the national charts of New Zealand, Australia, Great Britain and Ireland [7] . In the United Kingdom, 5 Seconds of Summer became the first Australian group to manage to lead the national ranking after 14 years [8] . In the USA, the mini-album released in support of the single “She Looks So Perfect” reached the 2nd peak position in the Billboard 200 rating [9] .
With the advent of increasing popularity and the signing of a contract with PR company Modest Management in April 2014, the media often tried to compare the group with One Direction , calling them a “new successful boy band ”, to which 5 Seconds of Summer replied that they were just a music band [1] [10] [11] .
In March 2014, One Direction again invited 5 Seconds of Summer to warm up their new world tour Where We Are Tour . From May to July, joint concerts of European groups took place, and from August the American part started, which lasted until the beginning of October.

Plate 5 Seconds of Summer also topped the official charts of Australia , Italy , Canada , New Zealand , Spain , Denmark , the Netherlands . In the UK, the album reached 2nd place on the album chart, for which it received a “ gold ” certification [13] .
