Biography
In 1904 he graduated from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Geneva with a bachelor’s degree in physical and natural sciences, completed the work “ Bromination and Pyrrole Recovery”, received a Doctor of Physical Sciences degree (specialty - chemistry).
In 1904 he returned to Russia. He worked as a chemist at a soda factory in the city of Slavyansk (1904), a sugar factory in the village. Golovchino, Kursk province (1905). In 1906-1097 - at the University of Geneva, assistant (1906), privat-docent (1907).
Since 1909 he worked at Kharkov State University , assistant, privat-docent (1911), senior assistant (1915), associate professor (1920), from 1925 to 1941 he was the first head of the Department of Organic Chemistry (part-time), head of the Scientific Department of Organic Chemistry, Head of the Laboratory of Organic Synthesis, Research Institute of Chemistry at Kharkov State University.
During the Great Patriotic War - professor at the Institute of Fisheries in Astrakhan (1942), head of the department of organic chemistry of the United Ukrainian University (1942-1944) in Kzyl-Orda ( Kazakhstan ), chairman of the Technical Department of the Kzyl-Orda regional plan (1943— 1944), head of the department of the Institute of Organic Chemistry at Kharkov State University (1944-1950).
There were two daughters: Elena (1905-1992) and Natalya (1903-1995) and son Boris (1904-?)
Scientific activity
He was engaged in scientific research in the field of pyrrole chemistry: its extraction from ammonium salt, reduction, halogenation and nitration of pyrrole, studying the interaction of magnesium-organic compounds with esters of orthosilicic and boric acids, the chemistry of the individual components of coal tar fractions - carbazole , phenanthrene , fluorene , acenaphthene . Developed methods for the analysis of organic compounds.
He is the author of more than 49 scientific works, some of which are classical in the teaching of organic chemistry, 11 works on the history of science, 60 textbooks and manuals, 19 educational and methodical works, 24 books and 73 articles on popular science topics.
He carried out four translations of fundamental scientific works.

- "The Course of Organic Chemistry" (1933), adopted as the main textbook on organic chemistry in higher educational institutions of the USSR (revised and additional ed. - X .: KSU Publishing House, 1952. 691 p. 15000 copies),
