Sort by size
In this understanding, the Plan is the “coarseness” of the image caught by the lens . The division of plans by size is a conditional concept. Each film school has its own conditional definitions of size.
Detail size (adopted in Russia):
- Detail (adopted abbreviation: “det.”), Macro-close-up (macro) - for example, to draw attention to a specific part of the object (recall the ear in “Solaris” by Andrey Tarkovsky). The plan, in which the character’s eyes are depicted on the whole screen is also called “Italian” - the name comes from spaghetti westerns .
- Close-up (adopted abbreviation: “cr. Pl”) - for example, to highlight an object from the background, to attract attention to it (head, portrait shooting).
- Medium , first medium plan (“belt”), (adopted abbreviation: “1 cf. Pl.”) - for example, to show the interaction of two or more objects (or the human body along the belt).
- Medium, Secondary Median (adopted abbreviation: "2 Wed. pl."); "American" plan - just below the knees (used in the filming of westerns to show the hero with the holster in its entirety. Nowadays, the best plan when shooting 16: 9)
- The general plan is to show a scene (for example, a person in an environment).
- The far plan is also for showing the scene (for example, a tiny person against the landscape ).
- Targeted plan - a kind of general plan, intended to indicate the place and time of action. The use of the term is more characteristic of television.

Division by Meaning
In this sense, the division defines the following plans.
- main plan (main story line)
- secondary (background) plan (political, social, historical, etc.)
Depending on the perception and personal perusal of a film, a minor plan may turn out to be the main one and vice versa.
