Biography
Born in 1923 in the village of Galashki, Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic . In 1941 he began serving in the Red Army . In 1942 he graduated from the Krasnodar Military Aviation Pilot School. He served in reserve aviation regiments in the Volga region and Siberia .
At the front since 1942. He flew on the IL-2 . He made over 100 sorties to attack enemy troops, was wounded three times, but each time returned to duty.
During the Battle of Kursk, Kostoev destroyed 11 enemy tanks . Upon returning from the next departure, his attack aircraft was attacked by three enemy aircraft . Kostoev shot down one plane, but his attack aircraft was also damaged. The pilot managed to make an emergency landing on his territory. The plane counted 17 holes.
He participated in the liberation of Belarus , the Baltic states and East Prussia . In April 1945, in the Königsberg area, a German ship was sunk, on board of which there were 125 enemy soldiers and officers. He won his second air victory there. Then his regiment took part in the Berlin offensive operation . A few days before the surrender of Germany, Kostoev shot down a third enemy aircraft.
He was presented for the title of Hero of the Soviet Union , but this was refused without explanation. The command appreciated the pilot, so he was not recalled from the front in 1944, when the Ingush were deported to Central Asia . In 1945, he went to relatives who were evicted to Kazakhstan near Alma-Ata , and rendered all possible assistance to them.
After the war, he served in the Air Force of the Baltic Military District . Engaged in flight test work. He died on August 6, 1949. He was buried in the city of Jelgava, Latvian SSR .
For courage and heroism in the fight against Nazi invaders in the Great Patriotic War, by Decree of the President of the Russian Federation No. 679 of July 6, 1995, senior lieutenant Kostoev Shirvani Ustarkhanovich was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Russian Federation .
