History

The Isolation Art Foundation was founded in 2010 [1] by Lyubov Mikhailova, the daughter of the last Soviet director of the insulation materials factory located in this territory [2] . After the collapse of the USSR, the plant stopped, because all the infrastructure into which it was included was destroyed [2] .

In the first years of work at Isolation, more than 20 art projects were implemented [3] . World stars of contemporary art worked here: Tsai Gotsyan , Daniel Buren , Boris Mikhailov , Rafael Lozano-Hammer , as well as almost all promising young Ukrainian artists: Zhanna Kadyrova , Sasha Kurmaz , Apl315, Roman Minin, Ivan Svetlichny, Hamlet Zinkivsky and others [3 ] .

The foundation’s activities were already attacked by Donetsk separatists in April 2014, trying to disrupt the All-Ukrainian seminar of public organizations held in the fund’s territory [4] : “These things will not be held in the Donetsk republic,” a picket spokesman said [5] .

On June 9, 2014, the territory of the art fund was seized by militants of the Donetsk People’s Republic [2] [6] [7] : as The Day newspaper noted

for the so-called DNR and for those behind it, it was completely obvious to get out of the way what gives development, thinking, search and, ultimately, freedom [8] .

A significant part of the fund’s staff was forced to relocate to Kiev, where it continued its activities with a large-scale collective project of installations in the public space “Capture” ( Ukrainian Zakhoplennya ), curated by American artist Clemens Poole [6] [9] [10] .
