Scrup Egerton ( August 11, 1681 - January 11, 1744 ) - British aristocrat and courtier , Viscount Brackley ( 1687 - 1701 ), 4th Earl Bridgewater ( 1701 - 1744 ), 1st Duke Bridgewater and 1st Marquis Brackley ( 1720 - 1744 ).

Biography

The third son of John Egerton ( 1646 - 1701 ), the 3rd Earl of Bridgewater ( 1686 - 1701 ), and his second wife, Lady Jane Paulet (1655-1716). According to his mother, he was the grandson of Charles Paulet (c. 1630 - 1699 ), 1st Duke of Bolton, and Mary Scrup. Mary Scroop was the illegitimate daughter of Emanuel Scroop, 1st Earl of Sunderland .

He was educated at Croydon School, founded by John Whitgift.

On March 19, 1701, after the death of his father John Egerton, 2nd Earl of Bridgewater , Scrup Egerton inherited the title and possession of Count Bridgewater. On June 18, 1720, he received the title of Duke Bridgewater and Marquis Brackley.

Career

Belonged to the party of the Whig , Lord-Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire ( 1702-1711 , 1714-1728 ). Scrup Egerton was in the service of Prince George of Denmark as a chamberlain and master of horse riding. Later, he served as a chamberlain to Karolina of Ansbach , princess of Wales, wife of Prince George of Wales , then became lord- suite under King George II himself .

On January 11, 1744, 62-year-old Scrup Egerton passed away; he was succeeded by his eldest son from his second marriage, Charles Egerton.

Family and children

On February 9, 1703, Scrupp Egerton first married his wife, Elizabeth Churchill (1687-1751), the daughter of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough , and Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough . they had two children:

  • John Egerton (1703 / 1704-1718 / 1719), Viscount Brackley
  • Ann Egerton (1704 / 1709-1762), 1st husband since 1725 - Riesley Russell (1708-1732), 3rd Duke of Bedford (1711-1732), 2nd husband since 1733 - William Wielers (? - 1769 ), the 3rd Earl of Jersey (1721–1769)

On August 4, 1722, he re-married Lady Rachel Russell (c. 1707–1771), daughter of Riesley Russell ( 1680 - 1711 ), 2nd Duke of Bedford ( 1700 - 1721 ), and Elizabeth Howland (c. 1682 - 1724 ). They had seven children:

  • Louise Egerton ( April 30, 1723 - March 14, 1761 ), husband since 1748, Granville Leveson-Gover (1721-1803), 1st Marquis of Stafford ( 1786 - 1803 )
  • Caroline Egerton (born May 21, 1724 )
  • Charles Egerton ( July 27, 1725 - May 2, 1731 ), Marquis of Brackley
  • John Egerton ( April 29, 1727 - February 26, 1748 ), 2nd Duke of Bridgewater (1744-1748)
  • William Egerton ( January 15, 1728 - February 10, 1729 )
  • Diana Egerton ( March 3, 1731/1732 - August 13, 1758 ), husband from 1753 Frederick Calvert (1731-1771), 6th Baron Baltimore ( 1751 - 1771 ), the spouses did not have children and in May 1756 they divorced.
  • Francis Egerton ( May 21, 1736 - March 8, 1803 ), 3rd Duke of Bridgewater (1748-1803).
