The main color of the scales is cream or gray-olive, the back and fins are gray [2] , the caudal fin and anus are bordered by a number of enlarged scales [1] . In the corners of the mouth at the marinka - two pairs of short whiskers [2] .

The pharyngeal teeth of these fish are three-row (5.3.2-2.3.5). The length of the marinka reaches 1 m, weigh up to 12 kg [1] .

The peritoneum is black and this probably results in the local name “karabalyk” or black fish [2] .

Spawning occurs in the spring in the rivers. Caviar is poisonous, bottom, sticky.

  • Schizothorax intermedius - Common marinka
  • Schizothorax pelzami - Trans - Caspian marinka
  • Schizothorax pseudaksaiensis - Ili marinka

Iliysk and pike-like marinka lead predatory life, feed on other fish, ordinary marinka feed mainly on invertebrates ( insects ), and Balkhash marinka - on plants [1] .

It is believed that these fish have tasty fatty meats, but they are eaten only after removing caviar, milk and black film of the peritoneum, as well as gills, since they contain toxic substances (especially in spring) [2] .
