Accent - emphasis on the volume (or otherwise) of a particular note or beat in a measure .
Accent marks are placed both above the notes (see the figure) and under the notes.
Emphasis has two concepts:
- Means of allocation of shares in a meter.
- One type of melisma .
Emphasis as a means of highlighting shares in a meter
Accent (the 4th image in the figure) is a fundamental concept in music , because it is the order of the even alternation of accented (strong and relatively strong) parts and unaccented (weak) parts in the meter that determines the coordinate-time grid on which the rhythmic pattern of any musical work is superimposed .
The accent sign is placed where it is necessary to violate the natural order of strong, relatively strong and weak fractions of a meter, for example, in:
- syncope - a shift in emphasis from a strong share of a meter to a weak one.
- Zatak - violation of the natural order of the shares.
If only a strong share is highlighted, then one sign is put. If it is necessary to distinguish both a strong and a relatively strong share, then a relatively strong share is distinguished by one sign, and a strong one by two, one below the other.
Emphasis as a type of sound science
They are divided into (see figure):
- 1st image. Staccato - separate and jerky sound extraction.
- 2nd image. Accented staccato - Staccato with maximum pauses between sounds, for even more separation of sounds among themselves.
- 3rd image. Marcato
- 4th image. Emphasis for highlighting shares.
- 5th image. Tenuto
