Story Description
The film is set against the backdrop of the Great Northern War in 1709 . King Louis XIV of France sends two duelists (Count Antoine de la Bush to Charles XII , and his rival Chevalier Charles de Breze to Peter the Great ) with personal tasks to pass personal letters and be observers to the warring monarchs.
On the way to Peter de Breze and his companions, brother and sister von Schomberg fall into the trap of Polish bandits. In the battle, von Schombergi is killed, the Frenchman is saved by the Russian guardsman Sergeant Grigory Voronov. The latter spends the night with a chevalier in the forest, and then brings him to his village, which the Swedes soon occupy.
The Swedes, to whom he joined de la Bush, are already aware of the "spy" and capture Voronov on a farm. They have a letter that Louis handed over to de Breze. La Bush learns from the letter that Louis asks Peter to put de Breze as a brawler, who has tarnished his honor, in the most dangerous place of the battle and realizes that his letter to the Swedish king has similar content. The cunning king sent two nobles to death, as they quarreled over the sympathy of Louis Charlotte de Monterras. De Breze, with the help of peasant women, beats Voronov away from Swedish soldiers. Graf de la Bush, fleeing, meets the “black rider” - the Polish noblewoman Anka, who swore with his brother Angie to avenge Peter for the destruction of her relatives found guilty of anti-Russian sentiments, and sends her a letter.
The ravens and de Breze disguise themselves in the Swedish uniform and drive across the bridge in the marsh leading to besieged Poltava, at this moment King Charles XII arrives with his retinue. The ravens shoot at Karl, but de Breze knocks down the sight, after which the heroes miraculously survive, moving through the quagmire. Wounded in the leg, Karl reads a letter handed to him by de la Bush, resents the behavior of the royal brother and decides to send the count to Louis with the news of the defeat of the Russians. Peter, dissatisfied with the fact that he was sent a "spy", sends de Breze and Voronova to the front redoubt - the most dangerous place of the battle. Anka and Angie arrive at the Russian camp, but the attempt fails, Angie is fatally wounded.
At dawn, the Swedes go on the attack and in a bloody battle take a redoubt attack, however, the Russian cavalry does not allow to consolidate success. De Breze and the Ravens are miraculously saved from the redoubt. Karl orders the army to bypass the Russians on the left, after a volley from both sides there is a fierce bayonet battle. Karl introduces a reserve, but Peter, fearlessly bursting into the ranks of the retreating, draws them into a decisive attack. Carla is taken away from the battlefield, Swedish generals are captured.
De Breze is taken into custody. Voronov dies, protecting Peter from Anka’s bullet, which he then hangs on the orders of the king. De la Bush and de Breze complete their duel. The victorious de la Bush refuses the offer of Peter I to serve him and takes the wounded de Breze to France. On the border, de Breze meets Charlotte, who learned about the content of the letter, and the lovers sail on the ship to search for happiness in a foreign land (together with the children of Voronov, whom de Breze adopted).

Interesting Facts
- Jean-Nicolas de Braze , the author of “Notes of the Brigadier Moreau de Braze,” became the prototype of the hero de Breze. These notes came to us in Pushkin’s translation. According to the memoirs, due to a duel he was forced to leave France and flee abroad [2] .
- Contrary to an erroneous opinion, the prototypes of Prince Philip and Comte de Guiche were not Philippe of Orleans and Armand de Gramont, Count de Guiche (described by A. Dumas ), who had close relations, they had already died by the time of the film (1709). The film also shows Philip II of Orleans (35 years in 1709) and Antoine V de Gramont, Duke de Guiche (37 years in 1709). Philip II was the son of Philip I and after the death of Louis XIV he became regent of France. Herzog de Guiche took part in all the military campaigns of Louis XIV, starting in 1688, and in 1724 became Marshal of France [1] .
- “Dmitry Miller learned French for the film and learned to ride a horse professionally,” said Oleg Ryaskov (director and producer of the film) in the afterword of his book Servant of the Emperor: “But the shooting does not always go smoothly! Once, when Miller drove off from a horse, Miller seriously dislocated his ankle and was limping to the end of filming! ” [3]
