Biography
At 13, he suffered from polio, the consequences of which he felt his whole life. At the age of 20, he joined the monastic congregation of the Oblasts of Mary the Immaculate and was ordained a priest at the age of 26. He studied philosophy and theology in the USA, taught at the seminary. In 1974, he was appointed general vicar of his monastic congregation, then defended his doctoral dissertation at the Pontifical Urban University of Rome.
In 1990, Pope John Paul II was appointed Bishop of Yakima, Washington. Six years later he was transferred to Portland, and a year later to Chicago, becoming the first-ever native of this city to head the local Catholic archdiocese.
He was elevated to the rank of cardinal in 1998 by John Paul II. In 2007-2010. led the United States Episcopal Conference.
In September 2014, he retired.
