History

The 287th Infantry Novograd-Volynskaya twice Red Banner Orders of Suvorov, Kutuzov and Bogdan of Khmelnytsky Division was formed in the region of Lipetsk on September 7, 1941 as the 287th Infantry Division (1st formation) . It included the 866th, 868th, 870th infantry; The 851th artillery regiment and other units. The commander of the 287th division, Colonel Eremin Iakinf (Mikhail) Petrovich, managed to get out of the encirclement at the end of October 1941 and retained the banner of the division. Thanks to this, the division, which the Red Army general staff already (too hastily) sentenced to disband, was retained and sent for reformation. In January 1942 it was included in the 3rd army of the Bryansk Front . She again entered the battle on February 4, 1942, north of the city of Mtsensk , where until July 1943 she fought stubborn defensive battles with superior enemy forces.

From March 18 to July 12, 1943 the division takes up defense in the area of ​​Orlov-Kotoba (Novosil) on the left bank of the river. Brook. A defense section with a front of 30 km covers one of the shortest, main operational directions of the Germans at the distant approaches to Moscow. In defensive battles in this sector, the division did not yield a single meter and, on the contrary, expanded the bridgehead, which served as the deployment site for the forces of the 63rd Army during a decisive breakthrough of the enemy’s defense. 07/12/43, loss: 123 people were killed, 541 wounded, 54 missing.

[2] In the Oryol offensive operation, the division of the 63rd Army (in which it operated until mid-December 1943) of the Bryansk Front participated in breaking through the defense of German troops in the Orlovka area (40 km east of Mtsensk ) and liberated about 100 during fierce offensive battles settlements. The division successfully operated in the Rivne-Lutsk and Proskurovsky-Chernivtsi offensive operations. Its units participated in the liberation of the cities. In early August, the division crossed the river. It hung in the Svinyari area (southwest of Sandomierz ) and then, in collaboration with other parts, fought hard battles to consolidate and expand the bridgehead in the area. In November 1944, it was transferred to the 3rd Guards Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front , which operated until the end of the war. In January-February 1945, the division participated in the Sandomierz-Silesian and Lower Silesian offensive operations. The personnel of the division fought bravely and skillfully in the Berlin and Prague offensive operations. “For exemplary fulfillment of the command assignments during the defeat of the group of Nazi forces” south-east of Berlin and during the liberation of Prague, the division was awarded the orders of Kutuzov of the 2nd degree and Suvorov of the 2nd degree (June 4, 1945).
