Sports career
He began his sports career as a swimmer, in 1947, won the national championship among juniors in the 200 m freestyle, a year later became the silver medalist in the 100 and 200 m freestyle. Then he moved to water polo. He played for the Neapolitan Circolo Canottieri.
At the Summer Olympic Games in Helsinki (1952), he became a bronze medalist in the Italian national team, repeated this achievement at the European Championships in Turin (1954), and becomes the champion at the Mediterranean Games in Barcelona (1955). Due to a conflict with the head coach, he could not take part in the Olympics in Melbourne (1956).
