History

Pinas was built in the Netherlands in 1625 . In 1629, the ship bought the Kingdom of Sweden for use as an auxiliary [2] . After the purchase, the Swedes renamed the vessel “Kalmar Nykel”, which means “Key to Squid”: a fortress with the same name covered the approaches from the sea to the city of Kalmar [1] . Soon the ship was incorporated into the Swedish Navy. When the Swedes decided to create a colony in North America, they chose Kalmar Nykel and Pin for the delivery of settlers ( Swede Fågel Grip ). In November 1637, both pinas and settlers left Gothenburg and set sail to the shores of the New World. In the North Sea, they were overtaken by a strong storm and pinnas missed. The Kalmar Nykel was carried to the coast of the Netherlands, but the crew managed to save the ship and take it to the local bay. A week later, “Vogel Grip” also sailed there. After a long overhaul on New Year's Eve, the ships set sail [1] . In March 1638 the ships moored at the mouth of the rivers Cristina and Delaware [3] , where Peter Cristina was founded by Peter Minoyit , named after the then Queen of Sweden Cristina . On the ships arrived 24 settlers. On February 7, 1640, the Kalmar Nyukel sailed for the second voyage and reached Fort Christina on April 17, bringing new settlers to the Swedish colony. Subsequently, this vessel made 2 more flights from Sweden to the colony and back. In total, from 1637 to 1644, the Kalmar Nyukel made 4 roundtrip voyages. In 1651 the ship was withdrawn from the naval forces of Sweden and was sold to a merchant. But according to another version, the Kalmar Nykel was sold to the Dutch, who used it as an escort ship. During the first Anglo-Dutch War in the North Sea [2] .

In 1986, the American composer Benjamin Lees wrote a symphony named after the ship “Kalmar Nickel”, which in 2003 was nominated for a Grammy Award , which was performed by the German State Philharmonic Orchestra Rhineland-Palatinate [4] . In 1996 - 1997, a copy of a sailboat under the direction of Allen Rowl was built in the state of Delaware in the USA . The ship was built at the shipyard in Wilmington on the Christina River, not far from the eponymous Swedish fort. The construction of the ship began on September 28, 1997 and ended on May 9, 1998 . The width of the vessel was 25 feet (7.6 meters ), length - 105 feet (32 meters), and height - 12 feet 5 inches (3.78 meters) [1] . The displacement was about 300 tons. Also on the ship installed electronic navigation equipment and two 165-horsepower diesel engine, carefully disguising them. The total cost of building the vessel amounted to $ 3.2 million. Some of the figures in the decorative decoration of the copy bear a portrait resemblance to the people who assisted in the implementation of the project, from the governor of the state of Delaware to voluntary assistants. The nose of the modern “Kalmar Nykel” pinas is decorated with a carved two-billed lion - a symbol of power and greatness. This figure was made by an American master R. Hoeluk. Also on the ship there are ten cannons that can fire cores [1] . The first flight from Wilmington to Baltimore and Annapolis "Kalmar Nyukel" departed on April 26, 1998 . Later, the ship participated in the filming of the Italian film Pirates ( Italian. Caraibi ) as a pirate ship [1] .
