The titular bishop of Valabria and auxiliary bishop of Toronto from March 26, 1976 to May 22, 1986. Coadjutor with the right to inherit the Archdiocese of Toronto from May 22, 1986 to March 17, 1990. The Archbishop of Toronto from March 17, 1990 to December 16, 2006. Cardinal priest with the title of church Ss. Marcellino e Pietro since February 21, 1998.
