Gagarin, Pavel Sergeevich

Prince Pavel Sergeyevich Gagarin ( July 11, 1747 - December 13, 1789 ) - Moscow Chief Commandant, Major General , poet and translator from the Gagarin princely family.

The third son of a prominent dignitary of Prince Sergei Vasilievich Gagarin (1713-1782) from his marriage to Countess Praskovya Yaguzhinsky (d. 1775), daughter of the Prosecutor General P. I. Yaguzhinsky .

Life and Works

In 1757 he was enlisted in the military. With the rank of colonel, he participated in the first Russian-Turkish war , commanded the 2nd Moscow Infantry Regiment. For the courage shown in the battle of Girsov on September 3, 1773, he was awarded the Order of St. George 4 degrees, "when the enemy, among the 11-thousandth corps, made a strong assassination attempt, Gagarin with his regiment, having met him with cannon and gun shots, was embarrassed and put to flight."

In 1779 he was granted the rank of Major General, since 1788 - Lieutenant General. In the last year of his life, he was the chief commandant in Moscow and lived in his father’s palace on Strastnoy Boulevard . He died after a long illness in December 1789, having lived only 42 years. Regarding his death, Count K. G. Razumovsky wrote to his son [1] :

 Yesterday, Prince Gagarin died here, leaving his young wife and children in the greatest debts in their former condition; he was loved by all and we regret; they are very familiar to you and have often been to Petrovsky . 

Gagarin was known as a poet and translator, was surrounded by Yu.A. Neledinsky-Meletsky , N.P. Nikolayev and D.P. Gorchakov , who served as his adjutant in the 1770s. Gagarin's works were published after his death in the magazines Reading for Taste (1792-1793), Pleasant and Useful (1794-1796) and Aonids (1798-1799) [2] . He translated from French “The Experience of Sensitivity, or the Letter of a Persian from London to a Friend of His Living in Spain”.

Family

Prince Pavel Gagarin was married to Tatyana Ivanovna Pleshcheeva (1761-1800), daughter of Prime Minister Ivan Vasilyevich Pleshcheev, sister of Vice Admiral Sergei Pleshcheev . According to contemporaries, she was a beauty and “just perfect”; in her youth, her poet “Yu. A. Neledinsky-Meletsky [ fondly and ardently loved and sang” ] [3] . Married:

  • Sofya Pavlovna (1785-1860), maid of honor, since 1804 the wife of Prince A.P. Obolensky (1769-1852).
  • Andrei Pavlovich (1787-1828), colonel and stalmeister of the court.
