Biography
William Axley was born on October 6, 1851 in Reisbach. He studied first theology , and then history at the universities of Berlin and Zurich , was a student, in particular, Theodor Mommsen . In 1874 he received his doctorate and in 1876 became a teacher at the cantonal school in Winterthur .
In 1887, he joined the newly created Department of Swiss History at the Swiss Higher Technical School of Zurich, and since 1893 also worked at the University of Zurich . As a historian, Exley was engaged in source studies, the study of local myths and legends, and the origin of the Swiss Confederation.
William Axley died on April 26, 1919 in Weggis and was buried in Fluntern Cemetery.
