He made his debut in the World Championship in racing in the Formula 1 class of Piercarlo on May 17 , 1981 in the small team of Ozella , in which he spent almost all his races. In 1981, in addition to participating in Formula 1 races, he competed in group C in a team with Michele Alboreto and Ricardo Patrese .

Piercarlo spent his first full Formula 1 season in 1983 for the Ozell team. Despite the lack of points at the finish of the 1983 season, Piercarlo continued his performance. The 1984 season was the most successful in Ginzani's career - it was in him that he managed to finish in the spectacle zone. Despite a serious accident at the 1984 South African Grand Prix and burns, Piercarlo was able to finish fifth in Dallas. In the middle of the 1985 season, Piercarlo left Ozell's team and transferred to the Toleman team, where another Italian Theo Fabi became his teammate. Despite the competitive car, Piercarlo failed to score a single point at the finish of the championship. The following season, Piercarlo returned to the Ozella team, but for the 1987 season signed a contract with the Liigier team, whose first pilot was Rene Arnoux . But the team Liigier Piercarlo failed to earn points. Piercarlo spent the 1988 season with the Zakspeed team, but the last season in Formula 1 returned to the Ozella team. In his final season, Piercarlo qualified only three times, and in the last Grand Prix with heavy rain, Nelson Piquet crashed into him from behind. After leaving Formula 1, he founded his team in the Italian Formula 3 . In 2000, his team debuted in the Italian Formula 3000 Championship.
